Sample Week: Breath Awareness
This week, the children will embark on a journey to deepen their awareness of their breath and how they breathe. By learning this simple yet powerful technique, children can feel calmer, more focused, and more present. As they explore their own unique breathing patterns, theyâll begin to recognise something specialâthat their breath is as unique as they are!
For any football fans in the classroom, you might be interested to know that we were lucky enough to work with Stuart Sandeman a few years before he shot to fame as the breath coach who offered tips on breathing well for England's Football Team! Though, we still think Harry Kane could use a few extra breathing tips đ. Next time you watch him play, see if you can spot any signs of an unhealthy breathing habit!
In the breath exercise below, you will explore your amazing breathing system. Â
Let's Breathe...
The Science Behind The Breath
Scientific research has proven that breath awareness offers powerful benefits for both mind and body. Below are some benefits of building healthy breathing habits. Embracing small shifts in how you breathe can make a big difference in your overall wellbeing.Â
-
Embrace the Present Moment: Focusing on your breath gently brings you into the here and now, grounding your awareness in the present.
-
Deepen Breath Awareness: By tuning into your breath, youâll learn to recognise when to adjust its pace, helping you to cultivate a sense of calm and control.
-
Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Slowing down your breath has a profound effect on your nervous system, naturally easing stress and anxiety.
-
Support Healthy Nasal Breathing: Breathing through the nose not only calms the mind but also helps lower blood pressure, promoting overall wellbeing.

Tweak the Technique
Our "Tweak the Technique" section offers a dynamic twist to the weekly breath exercises, designed to captivate children's interest and maintain their engagement. Each week, this variation introduces a fresh approach or perspective to the fundamental breathing practices, building curiosity and creativity. Whether it's exploring unique breath patterns, refining nose breathing techniques, or experimenting with breath counting, "Tweak the Technique" encourages children to actively participate in their breathwork journey while discovering new dimensions of mindfulness and wellbeing.
Kerry Snell, Primary School Teacher + School Breathe Breath Coach, Cliff Lane Primary School
"I've started teaching breathwork classes to the children twice a week and the feedback has been amazing! Our headteacher now wishes to roll out breathwork classes next year."
Headteacher, Bellfield Primary School, Birmingham
"We have been using School Breathe techniques after lunch at least 1 or 2 afternoons a week during wellbeing time. These work really well when we need to talk to a child who is is angry or upset."

Miss Wilson, Lauriston School, London
